How to Assemble, Operate and Disassemble the Merits P321

The P321 is a modern powerbase wheelchair that is designed for practical needs and performance. With the latest model, you can expect that it has a rugged yet solid frame, improved electronics, and a wide range of control that can be adjusted to enhance safety and use. Below, we will discuss quick and easy steps that can allow you to assemble, operate, and disassemble your P321 powerbase wheelchair.

How to Assemble the P321 Powerbase Wheelchair?

Begin by familiarizing yourself with the three main parts of the wheelchair such as the front unit, the rear unit, and the seat base. You may need additional tools such as a 17mm wrench and allen key to adjust the wheelchair according to your preference.

Step 1: To start with assembly, simply place the front section adjacent to the rear section. You should hear a click when both sections are securely put together.

Step 2: At this stage, the seat height can be easily adjusted. To do this, you will need a 17 mm wrench to loosen the nut and bolt.  When it is loose, move the pole at the right height and then tighten the nut and bolt.

Step 3: Place the seat directly on top and adjust the armrests, for added comfort. The armrests are secured with knobs where you can loosen to adjust and tighten back once you are satisfied with the height, width, and angle.

Step 4: Connect the controller to the power base below the seat and you should be ready to go.

How to Operate the P321 Powerbase Wheelchair?

Before getting ahead in operating the P321 Powerbase Wheelchair, it is important to remember the following safety precaution.

  • Do not use the power base wheelchair when drive motors are disengaged
  • Do not carry additional passengers on the wheelchair
  • Do not drive across a slope
  • Reduce using mobile devices or avoid going near high-powered electromagnetic areas when operating the P321 since the wheelchair is susceptible to this interference. (Ex. TV stations, radio transmitters, electrical conductors)
  • Do not drive in traffic, off-road, over steep slopes, near waterways, or during heavy weather conditions

The P321 is equipped with a control panel and a joystick to be able to drive the vehicle. Users should practice and gain some familiarity with the controls to avoid misuse. You can practice moving forward, reversing, turning corners, and swerving at a low-speed setting. Once you get the hang of it, you can adjust to the proper speed

Battery Conditions

To operate the vehicle, the controller requires a battery charge which should be done beforehand. Some indicators light up in front of the joystick to determine the battery status.

Indicators

Description

Red, yellow and green lights

This means that the batteries are fully charged and electronic controller is operational

Red and yellow lights only

This means that the battery is consumed but can still be operated. If you have an opportunity to recharge, then please recharge

Red light only

This means that you will need to charge the battery as soon as possible to be able to use the controls

Rapid flashing of lights

This indicates that you may need to recheck your controller or electrical system since there is something faulty. Please revisit check the manual for possible actions.

Ripple of lights

This means that you would need to turn off the controller and switch the joystick in Neutral. And then resume by turning on the controller

Speed Profile

When using the P321 controller, you can change the speed to either increase or decrease. The speed indicators should appear to inform you if you have reached the speed limits. If you are a beginner to the vehicle, we strongly advise as a safety precaution – to use the lowest speed setting first. When there is more familiarity, then feel free to gradually adjust the setting.

VSI Controller

This electronic controller consists of a joystick, a keypad, charging socket, and connectors. The joystick allows you to point the direction that you wish to go. By moving the joystick (center) in the neutral position, the electromagnetic brakes are engaged for safety. The further you point the joystick away from the center, the faster your unit will move. Other safety features are in place such as the ON and OFF key to operate the vehicle, and a horn key for emergencies.
