Factors To Consider Before Purchasing Only The Best 4-Wheel Models from 2019

There is a broad range of models available, so it crucial to understand certain factors to find the unit that best suits your needs and maximizes your mobility.

When and Where Will You Use Your Unit?

This is probably the most important question that you should ask yourself. You probably have an idea of where you intend to use your new purchase if you are thinking about buying. Some of the most common scenarios include:

  • Visiting family and friends

  • Independent journeys to the shop or supermarket

  • Taking the scooter with you on day trips and holidays

Portability

Another key consideration you should think of is whether you need it to be portable. Scooters are heavy pieces of equipment including axles, motors and large batteries. Portable units are designed to be lightweight and smaller. They can be dismantled so that lifting and transporting can be more manageable.

However, know that since portable models are designed with weight in mind, they are usually less comfy and durable.

Operation

They are usually operated using a key ignition. Once the key is removed, it’s not possible to drive your unit. But, it is also possible to disengage the parking brake easily, so you should secure it with locks before leaving it unattended.

All keys are supplied in pairs in case you lose one. But, it is still better if you can get replacement keys which can be requested and ordered from local suppliers.

Controls

Most are driven using a thumb or finger control on the handlebars. In general, the lever is called a wig-wag.

Majority of wig-wags are operated with the thumb, however on some larger scooters offering greater range, you will have ones that can be pulled back with your fingers. There are even some luxury models that combine both thumb and finger controls.

The standard controls have forward control paddle on the right-hand side with the reverse control padded on the left side. This, however, can be reversed if you are left-handed or have restriction on either hand.

Tiller

This is the front part of the scooter that includes the controls and handlebars to start and drive your unit. On most standard designs, the tiller angle is adjustable, allowing you to bring the controls either closer or further away. Such adjustments can have specific numbering slots or use a more flexible teeth mechanism that gives a wide choice of angles.

Bigger, more expensive models, on the other hand, have gas struts which makes them quite easy to adjust the tiller. Meanwhile, the more basic and portable models do not have the facility to adjust the tiller.

Seat

This is probably one of the most crucial aspects that you need to consider. Seat designs, features and comfort levels may vary greatly between models. The most basic scooter seat comprises a backrest and a padded base with width adjustable armrests.

Larger and more luxurious designs will have the “captain’s seat” type which is generally bigger, comfier and adjustable with a headrest for the utmost comfort.

Almost all scooter seats can swivel through 360°, 180° and 90°, to allow you to easily and quickly get on and off. Furthermore, the arms normally flip up to allow a sideways transfer if needed.

Also, know that there are main seat adjustments available. These include:

  • Headrest angle and height
  • Seat back angle
  • Seat position
  • Seat height

Batteries

All units are battery powered vehicles that use 2 12V rechargeable batteries. The battery size is directly proportional to the weight limit and the range of the mobility scooter.

The differing power output of a battery is measured in Ah or Ampere hours. In general, the heavier and larger the batteries, the greater its output capacity. Small portable models usually have 2 12Ah batteries while luxurious scooters can have batteries as large as 74Ah.

Accessories

They may come with accessories including:

  • Storage Covers
  • Storage covers are handy for keeping the rain and dirt off your scooter if you are not using it. The most basic covers have elasticized bottom edges with a universal fit.

  • Crutch or Walking Stick Holder
  • This is usually mounted to the universal socket behind the seat and consists of at least one or two upright tubes. On smaller scooters, clips can usually be mounted underneath the arm pads in order to horizontally carry the stick underneath the arms.

  • Shopping Baskets
  • There are some people that think the normal basket in front of the scooter is not enough to carry their items. Fortunately, there are various extra bags that you can buy that can be attached to the back of the seat.

  • Canopies
  • Canopies are rigid frames which fit on mobility scooters and provide you complete protection from rain and the sun. Although it is generally left during the winter months, you can now get a folding canopy that can retract when it is not needed.

You need to be cautious about canopies, however, since high winds can cause the mobility scooter to be difficult to control.
