Why You Should Consider Purchasing One of The Best Mobility Scooters in 2022

a. You can take longer, more varied trips with the best mobility scooters for adults

Generally speaking, if you want to use mobility equipment for longer distances and/or in a wider range of outdoor settings, a unit may be a wise choice for you.

How many miles does a mobility scooter do and how long do batteries last on mobility scooters for adults?

With an average operating range of 15 miles - and some super charged units being able to go as far as 40 miles without needing to recharge - they offer you greater flexibility.

In fact, many outdoor models are equipped with 4-wheel drive, wider tires and other features that allow you to travel over more uneven, rougher terrain as compared to an electric wheelchair.

b. You can more easily transport an electric adult scooter model

The most lightweight models are as little as 50 pounds (vs 100 pounds for your average power wheelchair), which makes it easy to take with you wherever you go.

Compact models are also easy to assemble and dismantle, and can usually fold up to fit under a bed, in a car’s trunk or take with you on a plane. It’s easy to store, too, when not in use.

c. Mobility vehicles are relatively inexpensive

As compared to a power wheelchair, electric mobility vehicles - which start as low as $900 - are an affordable option. As technology advances and more lightweight, compact models become available, chances are electric models will become even more financially accessible in the future.

d. Mobility models give you a greater sense of freedom

Between their longer distances, higher speeds and the overall feeling of being less physically confined, electric mobility units are a great option for those who want to experience more freedom (given that you don’t need the greater support associated with an electric wheelchair).

The right product—one that’s carefully chosen with your specific needs in mind—can powerfully enhance your mobility and overall quality of life for years to come. And there’s never been a better time to shop for it; with options available for virtually every activity, body type, budget and lifestyle, you’re sure to find a perfect fit.

Mobility Scooter

The advantages to purchasing an electric mobility scooter are endless. They are comfortable and lightweight, with many more options and designs to choose from. If you are in the market for an electric mobility scooter, there is no need to look any further.

The main reasons for choosing to purchase an electric mobility scooter is to heal more rapidly after a surgery, to prevent falls, and to allow for more freedom. Post-surgical limited mobility can be difficult to adjust to.

During post-surgery, you are not only in pain, but you do not have the independence you once had and cannot perform tasks for yourself. By using a mobility scooter, you can properly heal, regain strength and the risk of getting another injury declines.

Many adults under the age of 65 can also benefit from a mobility scooter. Those who suffer from chronic injuries and illnesses, such as pulmonary disease, cardiovascular issues and obesity, can greatly improve their quality of life by being able to move around and maneuver about on an electric scooter.

According to the National Council on Aging (NCOA), and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), every eleven seconds, a senior is treated in the emergency room for a fall. Every nineteen minutes, a senior dies from a fall. The CDC estimates that over three million adults who are sixty five or older are hospitalized each year for fall related injuries. Falls also cause hip injuries and are a common cause for Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI), according to the CDC.

Being elderly, diagnosed with a chronic illness or having limited mobility, puts our most vulnerable population at risk. When a senior has a fall and is subsequently hospitalized, with or without rehabilitation, not only does this expose the senior to further illness, but it also puts them under financial strain with mounting medical bills.

According to the CDC, in 2015, the total cost for fall injuries was $50 million, in which only 75% of these costs were paid for by Medicare and Medicaid.

In addition, falling can cause depression and anxiety in older adults. This can result in them wanting to stay home, deciding not to go see family and friends, and struggling with general feelings of helplessness. This can also cause some to neglect their health for fear of having another fall.

This has a tremendous impact on their lives, well being, and mental health. Many adults with disabilities, and those with limited mobility, often find themselves feeling isolated and alone.

An electric mobility scooter (also known as an elderly scooter) can give caregivers and family members peace of mind, knowing that you can safely navigate your home or even go to the grocery store safely. Investing in a quality mobility scooter can give you the freedom to live again, without fear of falling. Many mobility scooters can be used indoors as well as outdoors.

The advantages of a mobility scooter are priceless. You will have increased confidence and independence. Most are very easy to use and assemble. Most importantly, life is accessible again and you are still working at preventing further injury and hospitalization.

You can spend time with grandchildren, shop the day away with your child or friends, and live again!

Modern scooters are different from traditional or power wheelchairs which have a joystick for steering. Steering is done from a tiller (or steering column) in front of the user. Between the tiller and the user’s seat is a deck, or platform, where the user places their feet.

This significantly increases comfort and maneuverability. Bottom line: if you're seeking handicap scooters for sale you've come to the right place!

Choosing the right disability scooter or elderly scooter should not be difficult.

It all depends on your preference. Some people choose safety over performance. Others prioritize comfort. Whatever your preference, we have the best mobility scooter for you.

Our range includes folding mobility scooters, the perfect choice if you need to store your handicap scooter in tight spaces and transport it in the trunk of your car. We also provide heavy-duty scooters, which can support up to 500 pounds of weight. If you travel a lot, a portable travel scooter is the most suitable option. It can collapse or disassemble to make it easier to carry.

Our range of off road scooters includes a set of safer scooters, all with features including headlights and heavy-duty tires, which makes them perfect for use on unpaved roads. Disability scooters are a marvel of engineering and can enable you to regain your independence and live your life.

From going to the grocery store, to shopping at the mall, to visits in the park with loved ones, disability scooters can eliminate stress and help you get out of the house.

Do I Need a Power Scooter?

Now that we’ve discussed what the device actually is, we need to think about whether or how it could help you specifically in your life. These questions may help you get a feel for how you might be losing out due to mobility limitations:

Comfortable Mobility Scooter

  • Do you find yourself not being able to get around like you once did?
  • Are you disabled and unable to walk or stand for extended periods?
  • Do you refrain from going outdoors for fear of falling over, losing the strength in your legs, or losing your sense of balance?

An affirmative answer to any of these questions indicates that you could greatly benefit from getting a power mobility aid. You might want to know if a power wheelchair would be better for you rather than a scooter. If so, ask yourself the following questions. These will help you see what kind of mobility device will be most beneficial to you, assuming you have decided to get one:

  • Will you be using your disability scooter outdoors or at home only?
  • Are the areas where you plan to use it well paved? Will you ever need to go over grass, gravel, or other uneven terrains?
  • Do you prefer a tiller control configuration to a joystick-based one?

Operating Mobility Scooters

These are a few pointer questions to help you navigate your research on power scooters for sale: power scooters are more suitable for the outdoors and rougher terrain, and wheelchairs are usually controlled by a joystick rather than a steering column. There are a wide variety of power scooters for sale. We recommend browsing our collection. We are always available to answer any and all of your questions.

Important Things To Consider When Buying a Mobility Scooter

There are a lot of things to consider when buying a mobility scooter. Your choice will depend on your surroundings, budget, and preferences. Here are some useful tips to help you make the right decision. Whether you are looking for scooters that offer increased safety, or style, comfort or performance, here are things to look out for.

  • Weight Capacity: Check how much weight the scooter will support.
  • Range: Look out for the distance it will travel on a full charge.
  • Ground Clearance: Find a scooter with low ground clearance for increased comfort and high ground clearance for off-roading.
  • Turning Radius: Check how tight the turning radius is. A tight turning radius means you can navigate tight spaces more easily.
  • Safety Features: Look out for scooters that offer LED lights, emergency brakes, rearview mirrors, and an over-acceleration sensor.
  • Comfort: Look for scooters with ergonomic design, front, and rear suspension, and anti-tip wheels.
  • Performance: Look out for scooters with a high top-speed over 15mph, rear shock absorbers, and long driving range.
  • Style: Look out for scooters with alloy wheels, and a gloss finish.

Mobility Scooters and Speed

What's the maximum speed of a disabled scooter?

Most mobility scooters do not go faster than 4-5 mph. This is intentional - preventing seniors with declining reflexes from high speed situations where excellent sharp skills are paramount.

We do hear the occasional story of an elderly patient on a scooter for seniors involved in mini "crashes" with pedestrians and a great way to avoid these is by choosing a scooter with a 4-5 mph top speed.

That said, there are plenty disabled patients with perfect driving skills who would like to move a little faster. Rest assured you can also find scooters with a top speed of 8-9 mph and even some very fast models that can do 15 mph!

Can a mobility scooter be made to go faster?

You should never attempt to to get your scooter to go faster than its programming. Though it is technically possible to achieve higher speeds by fiddling with the controller or other component s of your scooter, this puts you and pedestrians at risk.

It may also be against the law as it might change the status of the vehicle from a medical one to a non-medical one.

Caring for your mobility scooter

Battery Charging

Should I leave my mobility scooter on charge all the time? You should only charge your scooter when actually needs topping up based on your needs.

Charging your scooter after every little use reduces the battery life as each battery only has a limited amount of charge cycles. Using up your charge cycles for unnecessary charges will mean your battery dies earlier than it should.

So, by all means, charge your battery when the gauge is low or if you are going out and want to be sure you have a full charge and won't run out of juice on the way. Just refrain from charging for the sake of it.

Can mobility scooters for adults go uphill?

All mobility scooters can go up hills, the question is how steep a hill. Folding travel scooters are usually at the bottom of the spectrum here, sometimes only capable of climbing gradients of 3-4 degrees.

Most mobility scooters can handle inclines of 6 degrees. That is by far the most common specification for scooters going up hills. You will find a handful of mobility scooters that can go up steeper gradients, notable mention here is the EV Rider, but only a few mobility scooters can do 8 degrees and 10 degrees. This is fairly rare for standard scooters.

When talking about off road scooters, the ability to climb hills rises sharply. Most high end off road scooters will be able to go up hills of at least 9 degrees, if not more. In some cases, such as Afiscooters by Afikim, you can get a lower speed, higher torque motor installed into your scooter. This will allow you to climb up even steeper hills that the specs say.

Just ask a customer service rep for more details. If you are used to calculating hills in percentages rather than degrees, here is a useful tool that converts between these two units of measurement.

Do mobility scooters get stolen?

Mobility scooters rarely get stolen, even when left out for short periods of time such as popping into a store. Disability scooters are key operated and the chances of someone having the right key to take off with your vehicle is slim...although not completely impossible.

Of course, that means you have to always remember to remove the key when leaving your scooter alone, even just for a short period of time.

To be extra safe, you can purchase alarms such as the type used with motorcycles. These will emit a shrill noise as soon as a non-owner moves the scooter even by a very small amount. For longer periods of time, we don't advise leaving your scooter out. Store it in your garage at home if you can’t bring it indoors.

If you're out and about, try disassembling or folding your scooter and storing it in a secure place if you cannot have your full sized scooter come with you.

Can I use my mobility scooter in the rain?

Most mobility scooters are not designed to be used in the rain. Though a light drizzle will not do much in terms of damage to your scooter, constant use in the rain can.

Your scooter will be double insulated so that you do not receive any electric shocks, however, contact with water will damage the scooter itself due to the electrical nature of its build. It's best to check the weather before leaving the house, and if you are caught unawares in a rainstorm, try to seek shelter until the rain passes.

You should also not run your scooter through puddles of water after a rainstorm for the same reasons.

Certain mobility vehicles come with optional rain slides and so are safer for use in the rain. Please contact us if you are looking for such a model so we can discuss this further.

Mobility Scooters and the law

Do I need insurance for a mobility scooter?

You do not need insurance for a mobility scooter. That is to say, while we cannot vouch for every local ordinance, we have never met a law that requires insurance for mobility scooters in the US.

Be sure to check your vehicle is actually classified as one - some high performance scooters aren't considered medical devices although marketed for the same kind of users.

Can you drive a mobility scooter drunk?

Never drive a mobility scooter drunk, even if you think you won';t be legally prosecuted for this.
Whether or not there might be a loophole here, your life and the lives of people sharing the sidewalk with you would be at horrible risk with a drunk person "behind the tiller".
Even at 4 mph you can knock someone over, or flip over entirely if you aren't driving with your full faculties.

Do I need a license plate on my mobility scooter?

Mobility scooters do not need license plates. The same disclaimer as was written for insurance above applies here too

Paying for Mobility Scooters and Getting a Free Scooter

People often ask: Why are mobility scooters so expensive?

First, let’s consider a more basic question: How much are power mobility scooters?

You might be surprised to learn that prices have been drastically going down over the years. There are now some U.S.-branded models starting at around $850 – considerably less than what many people believe an electric medical scooter actually costs.

While it is true that mobility scooters start at prices not far from $1000 per unit, a sum which can be challenging to many potential users especially those on social security or disability programs, this does not mean they are overpriced

The thing to keep in mind is that the market isn’t monopolized. Unlike when there were only a select few brands twenty years ago, there are now countless options available to you.

In fact, there are now so many brands swamping the power scooter market that it is fair to say that prices have really reached as low as manufacturers can possibly make them. If manufacturers could sell them at lower prices, they would do so just to undercut their competitors.

This means that the prices of mobility scooters are in proportion to the cost of their design; they must be FAA approved as medical devices. All other expenses then go into getting a final product to the customer.

Also, note that mobility scooters often come with warranty plans you wouldn't see in other industries. For example, in-home repairs on medical power scooters for the disabled people that use them. This increases costs on the dealer/manufacturer side, which in turn raises the consumer price.

Bottom line:

  • Mobility scooters prices start at around $850 for good brands

  • Mobility scooters are "expensive" due to their manufacture and other perks such as warranties which come along with them.

  • Though expensive to some, they are not overpriced.

What if you lack the financial means to buy a disability vehicle? True, it might be worthwhile and sensible to buy and not go down the route of a powered scooter rental, but that won’t help you if you lack the means!

What are your options if you find yourself in a position where you are unable to get a scooter do if your financial situation does not permit you to buy one out of pocket?

The 6 different ways you you could pay for or get a mobility scooter on a limited budget:

  • Out of pocket purchase

  • Financing plans

  • Private insurance

  • Charities and organisations

  • Government/State Social programs (Medicare/Medicaid/Social Security/Disability)

  • Veterans Affairs

We will go through each in detail below so you can understand what to expect from each

1. Out of pocket purchase

By far the simplest, quickest, and most convenient way to get a mobility scooter. No waiting, no doctors assessments or external factors deciding whether you get a scooter.

The obvious disadvantage is not everyone can afford this. Some customers will pay out of pocket on their credit card and then pay back the credit card bill over time. For customers with a good APR deal from their credit card company or bank, this can work out to be better than financing plans.

Bottom line:
Your credit card may enable you to have the advantages of purchasing a power scooter out of pocket when you don't have the funds right now.

2. Using Financing to Purchase Your Mobility Scooter for Adults

How about an option that allows you to buy and keep your scooter chair for about the same price as renting or even less? Sounds attractive? Enter financing programs. High-quality vendors who specialize in handicap scooters will invariably offer you financing – the ability to spread out the scooter cost and pay for it in installments. These payment plans usually require you to pay a monthly sum, and that sum can be as low as $70 for a small electric scooter.

Mobility Scooter

Many plans for power chairs and scooters don’t even require you to make any down payment at all – you start off with a regular monthly payment soon after your purchase.

Depending on the total amount the product costs, it may take 12, 18, or even more months to pay off, but remember: you’re paying monthly sums that are often lower than rental fees and for your money, you get a scooter that is your very own.

Comfortable Mobility Scooter

Financing plans are a great answer for customers who cannot afford a mobility scooter on the spot. They allow you to spread the cost of your scooter over several months or even years.

At Scooters 'N Chairs, we have two financing partners, Klarna & PayTomorrow. The way to finance a mobility scooter is to add the item to your cart and proceed to checkout as usual. Then, select a financing option as your payment option instead of the default, which is paying by credit card.

Once you continue, you will be redirected to the financing company's site where you will be asked a few questions and then told whether you are eligible for financing on the scooter of your choice.

If yes, you will be shown your options: how much you would be paying per month, for how long, and at what interest rate.

After you agree to the terms, the order goes through and we ship out your item just like any other order.

From that point and on, we are responsible for your scooter, its warranty and delivery, but payments are made directly to the financing company and have nothing to do with us.

Sometimes you may even be eligible to a 90 day or 12 month interest-free period. If you repay the full sum within that time, you don't pay a penny of interest!
Bottom line:

  • You can get financial help to buy a mobility scooter in the form of financing plans

  • The financing process on our site is super easy to follow

  • Great advantage of financing is interest free loans (some cases)

  • Mobility scooter financing can cost as little as $70 per month

3. Private insurance for mobility scooters

Does health insurance pay for mobility scooters? Examples would be Humana, Blue Cross, United Healthcare, Anthem, Cigna Health or Aetna.

Private insurance may theoretically pay for your mobility scooter but things can get tricky here.

Let's remember that insurances companies want to make the most money and payout the least the can. They won't easily hand over a scooter worth $1000 or more unless forced to do so.

Firstly, not all insurers will pay for your scooter directly by allowing a dealer to bill them for the item.

In many cases they expect you to pay out of pocket, and then they would reimburse you if they agreed to do so.

They may also insist on your getting your scooter from a certified dealer - most online power scooter shops aren't certified for this and the pool of certified dealers for insurance is getting smaller and smaller.

At Scooters N Chairs, we often have customers calling us to see if we are certified, saying they've tried dozens of places and have been unsuccessful in finding a certified dealer and their insurance can't help them find one.

All this is to make it hard for customers to actually get a scooter with insurance.

Then there is time factor. Anecdotal experience suggests waiting times of 6-9 months before you actually see your scooter. The paperwork is insane, there a repeat visits to your doctor, over several months, coupled with another months wait for the paperwork to be approved, and then another few months on top of that if reimbursement needs to be approved.

Private insurance isn't very generous in their assessment of whether you truly require a mobility scooter. Shockingly, sore arms from contant propelling of a manual wheelchair or the inability to enjoy the outdoors are often deemed not enough of a reason for you to get a free scooter.

Bottom line:

  • You can get a free mobility scooter from private insurance, but usually only after months of paperwork and heartache

  • You can get a free mobility scooter from your private insurance ONLY if your situation is really bad

4. Can I get a free mobility scooter from Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security or Disability?

Almost all that was said above for private insurance applies to getting a mobility scooter from government programs too.

You can in theory get a free mobility scooter from Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security and Disability, but only in certain cases and with a lot of headache

In short:

  • Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security or Disability will do all they can to get out of giving you a scooter

  • Paperwork volume and procedure is horrendous

  • Wait time until you get your scooter is often above 6 months

  • Finding a dealer that Medicare/Medicaid accept can be extremely difficult

  • You can only get a free scooter through Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security and Disability if they deem your case extreme enough. If you are able to walk indoors but want to go outdoors, that would generally not be enough of a reason to get a free scooter

  • You will often be told to get a wheelchair instead of a scooter as even mobility scooters are considered more "recreational" and "unnecessary" than wheelchairs by government programs.

One last point to consider: What kind of scooter will Medicare or government programs pay for?
  • Medicare will usually give you a generic brand, simple scooter.

  • Medicare will almost never give you a scooter by a higher end US brand, a scooter with high performance or features such as folding scooters.

Charities & Organizations:
Some illnesses have charities or groups that provide assistance to people suffering from that particular ailment. Examples include the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and the American Stroke Association.

If you eligible to help from such a charity, there is a small chance you can get a free mobility scooter off them. They might have used models or in rare occasions would be willing to pay for a scooter if the situation really necessitated one.

Bottom line:
  • You might be able to get a free scooter from a charity associated with your condition, though chances are slim

5. Can Veterans get free mobility scooters?

In contrast with other government programs, the VA is far more likely to give you a free scooter if you or a family member fall under their care.

To receive mobility equipment or a grant to purchase such items, the first step would be a visit to a local VA centre.
They might decide to do some tests on you to decide out which mobility vehicle would be best for you and which kind you could get for free.

We are always here for our national heroes. If you need someone to speak to your local VA we are happy to help, and if you want a scooter that's better than what the VA will cover, we will always give you a discount as a veteran of the armed forces.

Bottom line:

  • The VA is likely to give free scooters to veterans

  • They might give you a grant or an actual scooter

  • In all cases Scooters N Chairs give veterans special discounts

Running costs of mobility scooters

It costs very, very little to run a mobility scooter. The only running bills you have is your electricity bill for charging your scooter when the battery is down.

At the average US electricity cost of $0.12 per kilowatt hour, a full charge of a standard battery pack (40 Ah) would cost 4.4 x 0.12 = $0.53.

The Ultimate Checklist Before Purchasing a Mobility Scooter

Making the decision to buy a mobility scooter is a major step in anyone’s life—so congratulations on beginning this important journey. For nearly two million people like you or the loved one you’re supporting through this process, motorized mobility devices provide a vastly improved lifestyle with more access to get up and go whenever and wherever you want.

Comfortable Mobility Scooter

While you’re excited about the freedom and independence provided by a motorized handicap scooter, you may not be sure about the details of making it happen. Many first-time buyers feel unclear about when and how to purchase mobility equipment, especially as the technology in this field becomes ever more advanced. Even with loved ones involved in research and planning, this period of time can feel overwhelming.

Luckily, your ideal mobility solution is well within reach when you’re empowered with the right information. Breaking the process down into simple steps will help you to navigate this transition with confidence.

This article will guide you through the ultimate checklist for purchasing a handicap scooter for you or your loved one. By the time you finish reading it, you’ll have the knowledge you need to make the best choice for your or your loved one’s mobility goals.

Advantages to purchasing an electric mobility scooter

a. The Best Mobility scooters allow for longer and more varied trips.

As a whole, mobility scooters are better for those who want to use their equipment for longer distances and/or in a wider range of outdoor settings. The average electric scooter has an operating range of about 15 miles, though some models can go as far as 40 miles. Many outdoor scooters are equipped with four-wheel drive, wider tires and other features that enable them to tackle slightly rougher terrain than outdoor wheelchairs.

b. Handicap scooters are easier to transport.

A lightweight mobility scooter can weigh as little as 50 pounds, making it much easier to take on the go. Simple to assemble and dismantle, a compact model can be folded to fit in the trunk of a standard-sized car, under a bed or even on a plane.

This alleviates the need for a handicap-accessible van, and allows for easy storage when the equipment is not in use. There is a wide range of handicap scooters for sale, we recommend doing your due diligence and proper research beforehand. Make a list of the top 3 features most important to you and go from there.

c. Cheap mobility scooters

Electric mobility scooters tend to be the less expensive option, with cheap mobility scooters starting at around $900. With more lightweight and compact models coming to the market, they will likely become even more financially accessible in the future.

d. A medical scooter can provide an increased sense of freedom.

For people who do not require the support of a wheelchair, using an electric mobility scooter can add even more fun and independence to everyday activities. Between their longer distances, higher speeds and the overall feeling of being less physically confined, electric mobility scooters are attractive to those seeking the most liberating experience possible.

Mobility Scooters We Recommend

EV Rider’s Royale 4 Dual Seat Scooter, which has 32-inch seating so wide you can even take a friend with you. This particular model can take one rider up to 32 miles and operate at a speed of 9 miles per hour.

A “lighter” but still heavy duty option, such as Drive Medical’s Phoenix 4-Wheel Heavy Duty Scooter, supports extra weight (up to 350 pounds as opposed to the average 300) and offers many of the same outdoor capabilities. Models on this end of the heavy duty spectrum can still travel about 15 miles on a single battery charge, but are less expensive and more portable.
Comfortable Mobility Scooter

A model like Afikim’s Breeze S 4-Wheel Scooter, acclaimed for its ergonomic design, can take you on outings of up to 29 miles through either urban or rural settings. Customers requiring additional space can choose a wider seat option, although this will halve the scooter’s operating range and drop its maximum speed from 9.3 mph to 7.5 mph.

Those who want to go even farther can opt for an extended distance model such as E-Wheels’ 72 Scooter. This electric mobility scooter can travel 43 miles on a single battery charge and reach a maximum speed of 15 miles per hour.

Drive Medical's Spitfire Scout 4 is an example of a lower-cost but still very effective extended range mobility scooter. For its price under $1,000 and a total weight of only 94 lbs., the Spitfire Scout 4 travels an impressive 15 miles on a full charge and is more portable than heavier alternatives.

Comfortable Mobility Scooter

Easy assembly and transportation are deciding factors in many scooter purchases. Compact electric scooters can be folded up in a matter of minutes, allowing them to be stored in the back seat or trunk of a standard-size car. Contrary to what many people think, these scooters can even be taken on airplanes. Travel scooters are now extremely advanced: a model like Drive Medical’s ZooMe Auto Flex folding scooter, for instance, folds and unfolds in as little as 15 seconds using a wireless key fob.

The trade-off in this category of electric scooter is that with greater portability and smaller size comes a decrease in overall comfort. A lower weight capacity, smaller seating and less padding are some of the reasons travel scooters may be not the most fitting for daily use.Comfortable Mobility Scooter

Pride’s Go-Go Elite Traveler scooter gets raves for not only its cushioned, supportive seat, but also for being so lightweight and easily portable. It’s available in both 3-wheel and 4-wheel models.

Their other electric scooters, including the Go-Go Sport 4-wheel and the Victory 10 3-wheel are some of the top sellers in the entire category of mobile electric scooters. In addition to a stellar reputable company for transforming what lighter-weight, portable scooters can do, Pride offers airtight warranties and excellent support.

Know What to Ask the Vendor

Now that you have a better idea of what type of equipment you need, you’re ready to move ahead in purchasing your mobility scooter! Taking care to prepare a personalized list of wants and needs will help you optimize the shopping experience. It also makes it easy and effective to shop online.

Make sure you are working with a reputable mobility vendor with excellent customer reviews. The person assisting you should be a good listener who isn’t trying to rush you into a purchase. Whether it’s online, on a phone call or chat, or in person, this should be a clear, helpful conversation that puts you first.

Never hesitate to bring up a question or concern with your vendor; if something seems a little off now, it could be a frustrating problem down the road. Make sure you’ve looked into all of the following before deciding to purchase a specific product.

Comfortable Mobility Scooter

What kind of battery does the equipment use?

Whether you’re buying a mobility scooter or an electric wheelchair, the battery is one of the most important parts of your purchase. The battery will be included in the final price of your equipment and should last you several years with the right quality and care.

Comfortable Mobility Scooter
It is important to understand the type of battery used in your specific electric medical scooter, and the level of effort needed to keep it properly charged. To avoid paying for a longer battery life than you need, estimate your daily mileage. You might realize that a smaller operating range would be a more time and cost efficient solution for you.

If you need help estimating your daily mileage, speak up! Asking this kind of question ensures you’re going to get what best suits your lifestyle and current needs.

What if it doesn’t fit or work like I thought it would?

All good vendors will give you the opportunity to try out the equipment, with a fair trial period. After all, the goal is to help you lead the life you want, with the right electric mobility solution to provide you with the freedom you desire - and deserve. You’re making a significant investment of time, effort and finances, so every part of the scooter should fit, feel and work exactly how you want it to. To ensure your total satisfaction, the vendor should help guide you through thorough testing that includes turning, slowing, stopping and if applicable, dismantling the equipment.

Comfortable Mobility Scooter

During this try-out you should also check that you can comfortably get on and off the equipment with the same amount of assistance you will have in your day to day use. Also confirm that the equipment can fit in the entryways, vehicles and other spaces you need it so.

If these or any other issues are troubling you, whether before or after your purchase, make yourself heard. Your vendor will be able to suggest adjustments that could help solve the problem, and if necessary make it quick and easy for you to return the product.

How will I get the equipment home and set up?

Comfortable Mobility Scooter

Delivery and assembly options will vary based on where you purchase your mobility equipment and what type of model it is. For example, a lightweight travel scooter can be delivered in a box and be assembled by you or a loved one. A heavy duty product will likely come fully assembled. With an online retailer, you will not have to worry about transporting your equipment home in your own vehicle.

What if something breaks?

Like a car or other large purchase, your mobility scooter may require periodic maintenance. Asking about extended warranties, availability of spare parts and options for servicing will give you the comfort of knowing you’ll have friendly, knowledgeable support should anything go wrong.

Get the most out of your new purchase.

You’ve selected a mobility scooter for adults that you feel great about– now all that’s left is to put your new equipment into action and seize the opportunity to make this new chapter of your life full of new freedoms, great opportunities and an improved outlook. The transition to using motorized mobility equipment can present unfamiliar challenges, and will have different physical, emotional and social impacts on each person.

Because preparation always makes the process smoother, we recommend taking a few key steps before your first day as a handicap scooter user. With the right advice and an engaged support system you will be ready to roll with confidence.

Understand how to charge your mobility scooter battery.

One of the most common (and easily avoidable) sources of problems with motorized mobility equipment is incorrect charging and maintenance of the battery. To optimize performance and reduce the risk of damage, make sure you understand the guidelines for your specific device.

Comfortable Mobility Scooter

Most electric mobility scooter batteries should be charged every night. This takes an average of six to eight hours, though the time varies by make and model. Most devices include chargers with automatic shut off, allowing the user to plug it in at night and have fully charged batteries by morning.

If you use your equipment outdoors, we always recommend leaving the house with a full charge. You should also bring your battery charger with you in case you have an unexpected need for it.

Make your home wheel-friendly.

Making small adjustments to your home environment can significantly ease the transition into using your new mobility equipment. You can optimize a house or apartment for medical scooter use for a low cost, DIY additions such as entry ramps, lower shelving or grab rails.

Comfortable Mobility Scooter

A top priority in this stage is making surfaces as smooth as possible, which could include removing rugs or paving gravel driveways with concrete. Bringing home a new mobility scooter can also be an opportunity to think about larger changes that could enhance your or your loved one’s quality of life, such as installing scooter lifts or designing a handicap-accessible bathroom.

Practice, practice, practice

This is just the beginning of a long chapter, so be patient as you and the people in your life adjust to the daily realities of your new mobility solution. For instance, you may need to complete several test drives close to home before taking your scooter out on the town, or learn any local traffic laws that apply to your device. Friends and family should become familiar with the equipment as well, as they may be helping you assemble, transport and maintain it.

Comfortable Mobility Scooter

Give yourself extra time to get from place to place during this early stage, such as when taking your folding mobility scooter on a bus for the first time. As with other new skills you will see improvement every day—all the more so if you commit to practicing challenging tasks, seeking informative resources and welcoming support from loved ones.

Today’s scooters are much easier to use and maneuver, but practice makes perfect and you want to be able to use your new scooter so it will benefit you the most. Once your scooter is safely assembled and has a fully charged battery, you are ready to begin your first test run. Here are some practice tips:

  • Make sure you are aware whether your scooter can be used indoors as well as outdoors.

  • Practice safely getting in and out of your new mobility scooter for adults.

  • Pick a safe space for some practicing. You will need to learn how to accelerate, slow down, stop, reverse and make turns.

  • Start off slowly. There is no rush and you must ride safely in order to prevent injury.

  • Follow the “rules of the road.” Stay to the right and if others need to pass, move aside. Get a bell or horn so others know you are coming.

  • Make sure your destination allows scooters.

  • Do not call or text while driving!
